Blast furnace slag is a nonmetallic byproduct of the manufacture of pig iron in a blast furnace. BFS consists primarily of silicates, aluminosilicates, and calcium-alumina-silicates. BFS forms when slagging agents (e.g., iron ore, coke ash, and limestone) are added to the iron ore to remove impurities.
Today, blast furnace slag usage in the cement industry is known as slag cement. This term usually refers to either combinations of Portland cement and ground slag or to the ground slag alone. Within the current European cement standards, 14 listed cements may contain slag in different percentages by cement mass 8 .
